Algerian boxer Imane Khelif’s participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics sparked significant controversy regarding her gender identity. In response, her father, Amar Khelif, publicly defended her, asserting that she was born and raised as a girl. He presented official documents, including her birth certificate, to substantiate his claims.

Contrary to some reports, Amar Khelif did not state that his daughter is transgender. He emphasized her female identity, stating, “My child is a girl. She was raised as a girl. She is a strong girl.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that Khelif met all eligibility criteria to compete in the women’s boxing category. IOC President Thomas Bach stated, “We have two boxers who were born as women, who have been raised as women, who have a passport as a woman, and who have competed for many years as women.”

Despite the controversy, Khelif’s achievements in the ring have been celebrated, marking a significant milestone for Algerian women’s boxing. Her father’s defense and the IOC’s statements aim to clarify misconceptions and affirm her rightful place in women’s sports.
